The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) will launch the Xhariep District Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) as part of efforts of addressing various social challenges that are faced by our communities such as violence against women and children, alcohol and drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and so on.
The continuous rise of social ills in our society poses a threat to the construction of a caring and socially cohesive society. It is against this background that the MRM programme is being revived and District MRM structures being launched to assist government in its quest to stem the tide of social ills that are ravaging our society. “In building a caring nation, we have to join hands to restore the moral fabric of our society. Our constitution as well as the National Development Plan propels us to construct a nation that guarantees peace and safety, as well as a socially cohesive society for all. We must therefore be hard at work to ensure that our communities are indeed non-racial, non-sexist, prosperous and democratic. The abuse of our children and women as well as alcohol and drug abuse must be strongly condemned and totally rejected by all of us. We cannot grow South Africa if the social ills are not addressed”, stated the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for SACR, Ms Limakatso Mahasa.
The launch of District MRM was kickstarted in Welkom for the Lejweleputswa district on 1 April 2021. The programme will be rolled out to other the other three (3) districts after the launch of the Xhariep District MRM. The District MRM structures, consisting of various sectors of society will be responsible for programmatic interventions within the district to ensure that there is a sustained intersectoral interventions to deal with the social ills besetting local communities.
