Preston Davids has been invited by the International Judo Federation (IJF) to train in Japan for four (4) weeks in April 2014. Preston is currently the top Senior Judoka in the Free State and holds the ranking of a 2nd Dan and is currently ranked 2nd in South Africa. Preston has been part of the Free State Sport Science Institute’s (FSSSI) High Performance Program for elite athletes and coaches since April 2013.
During 2013 Preston performed his best Judo ever, reaching the following milestones:
- 1st place at the SA Open Championships in Port Elizabeth (July 2013)
- 7th place at the African Open Championships in Mauritius (November 2013)
- 1st place at the East Coast International Judo Championships in the USA (December 2013)
- 3rd place at the Northern Eastern Open Judo Championships in the USA (December 2013).
Since Preston joined the Department’s High Performance Program, he has gone from strength to strength as his conditioning program is compiled in such a way that the majority of exercises simulates Judo skills, which means that his conditioning exercises have a direct transfer to his skills sessions.
Preston is hard working and a very talented Judoka; he has excellent fast foot work that gives him a huge advantage over opponents. He is known to beat his opponents by doing beautiful and effective throws. Preston is a very dedicated Judoka who commits to conditioning sessions five times per week at the FSSSI, on top of the daily skills sessions at the Dojo.
MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr. Dan Kgothule would like to congratulate Preston on this achievement. “It is for this reason that the Department’s High Performance programs was designed, to produce local talent that can perform at an international level.” Mr Kgothule said.
