The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation was awarded a Certificate and a Trophy by the South African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA) for its excellent performance in meeting reporting standards.

On all the reporting requirements in the Annual report for the financial year ending 31 March 2012, the Department received the highest score among all Free State Provincial Government Departments with a score of 721 out of a possible 771 which translates to 93.51%. The Department was also awarded a trophy for Transparency.

The SAIGA Reporting Awards are firmly established and have become a highly visible instrument and benchmark to monitor public accountability and transparency in national and provincial departments.

SAIGA’s Executive President highlighted the fact that the statutory performance reporting requirements of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and the Treasury Regulations provided the South African public with a wealth of information not only about the financial results of the Departments in an understandable format, but also gave a detailed account of the objectives which were set and whether or not these objectives were met. Further information which has to be disclosed includes reasons for non-performance and actions taken to rectify the situation.

The SAIGA Award is another feather in the cap in addition to the fact that, for the first time since its inception the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation received a Clean Audit report from the Auditor General for the financial year ending on 31 March 2013. This means the Department has received an Unqualified Audit Report without Audit Findings.

“The recognition by the South African Institute of Government Auditors is also a tribute to the hard work put in by the Department and the award is recognition of the good work already done in the run-up to the clean audit the Department received this year. I thank all men and women in the Department who have ensured that we rise to the occasion this time around”, stated Mr Dan Kgothule, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.
