National Book Week is the most recognized reading promotion campaign in South Africa implemented by the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) in partnership with the national Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. It is an important initiative which encourages the nation to value reading as a fun and pleasurable activity and to showcase how reading can easily be incorporated into one’s daily lifestyle. SABDC celebrates National Book Week on 7-13 September 2020.

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) takes this opportunity to congratulate Karla Pretorius – a Free State-born international netball star – on winning the Global Woman in Sport award at the 2020 edition of the Momentum G-Sport Awards held on 31 August 2020. This new award seeks to honour a woman, who is impacting sport globally, and going the extra mile to put women’s sport on the map internationally.

SOCIAL SUPPORT TO FREE STATE (FS) ARTISTS APPLICATION In addition to the Relief Fund and 4IR resources made available to mitigate against widespread cancellation of festivals, music concerts, exhibitions, productions and other events in the wake of the COVID 19 Pandemic, the FSACC has now extended the scope to include social support to Free State artists and creative industry workers infected or affected by the COVID 19 pandemic.

FREE STATE POET – MOSHE SEKHOBO – WINS AVBOB POETRY COMPETITION

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) is proud to announce that one of its own prolific authors and poets, Moshe Samuel Sekhobo, is the 2019/2020 AVBOB Poetry Competition award winner. He won 1st place in the Sesotho Language Category. The AVBOB Poetry Competition is a national competition that includes all 11 South African languages in all the 9 Provinces; with 15,000 poets competing in all 11 South African languages. DSACR MOURNS PASSING OF JUDO CHAMP – PRESTON DAVIDS

It is with shock and sadness that the Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) has received news of the untimely passing of Preston Davids – the reigning Judo Africa Champion in the under-60kg weight class. Davids joined the Free State Sport Science Institute (FSSSI) in 2013 as a High Performance athlete where he represented the Free State Province and achieved in several competitions at a national level. Happy New Year Celebration to Basotho

The 1st of August marks the new year celebration for Basotho (Selemo sa Basotho). The observation of the 1st of August as a new year by the Basotho people is in in recognition of nature’s giving way to new life after the dry season, commonly known as winter season according to Gregorian Calendar, relying on the position of the moon, the natural indicator of the season rotation. COVID-19 Relief Fund Payments to Artists Effected

Subsequent to the commitment to effect payments to Free State artists and athletes made on 03 July 2020, the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has started with the payment process through the Free State Arts and Culture Council (PACC). Payments to artists whose applications were successful in the category of Financial Relief started on 17 July 2020. Of the 730 applications received, 360 applications were approved. Read more
